Upcycled Sweater Baby Blanket

I saw this idea on another blog that I like – This Mama Makes Stuff. As luck would have it, I had a cousin about to have another baby and hadn’t yet gotten a gift. Now, I think Carrie said that she used all cashmere. I didn’t do that – but I did get some super soft old sweaters in colors that I love (don’t worry – all sweaters were laundered and prepared for baby loving).

I had some actual pictures of the process as I made this blanket – but one crashed laptop later – and those are gone. Ah well. In short, I just cut 16 4*4 squares from each sweater. Then, I used a super soft fleece for the back and added a satin binding. I’m not a quilter…but this process made me consider making a quilt. I kind of liked the planning and piecing of all the squares. And (nerd alert) the math and pattern making was fun.

Now – the only slight issue is that said cousin had a girl. They didn’t know what they were having. This blanket is definitely not girly. But – I don’t think she’ll mind that the blanket has no pink or ruffles. This baby girl is going to spend a lot of time out in the country and I think this blanket will do her just fine. Furthermore, baby girl has a 17 month old brother – so he can use it too. I know. She crazy. šŸ˜‰
